Small Business Marketing – How to almost DOUBLE your productivity:
I’ve been doing something for the last three weeks or so, that has almost doubled my productivity, and I wanted to share it with you.
It’s SO easy to do — and, it takes maybe 5 extra minutes per day, to implement.
And yet… it’s probably going to be responsible for most of the extra income and “big accomplishments” I make this year.
What am I so excited about?
Let me tell you right now. Here’s the deal:
You know how, when you work out in the gym with a training partner, your workouts are generally much better?
You generally push harder when you’re lifting, so you somehow manage to squeeze out a few more reps than you’d normally do, if you were on you own.
Or, you add on an extra 10 – 20 pounds per side, that you’d never even think of doing if you were by yourself?
Well, there are a few reasons why this happens:
1. For starters, if you’re competitive… you’re going to want to do better than your workout partner — or at least, not let him beat you by much.
2. When someone’s looking over your shoulder — willingly — you’ve given them permission to spy on you. And in a case like this… you want to impress them.
You don’t want someone thinking you’re doing less than you can… or worse — that you’re giving less than 100%, right?
Of course not.
3. Lastly, if you’re a driven person… then you’re going to drive even harder when someone else is watching you.
This layer of accountability has many subtle psychological effects on how you do things and what you do.
So, how is this relevant to productivity?
The answer is simple. I recently started “working out” with a friend of mine, only this time… we’re not working out in the gym.
We’re working out with our time and with our schedules and with how productive we are.
See, normally, every evening… the last thing I do at work, is… I summarize the tasks I need to do for the next day. I write them down on a pad and that pad sits just to the left of me at my desk (which is clean and clear for the next day – so I can sit down and start producing, immediately).
Now, with this time-accountability program, I just take that same list of tasks, and e-mail it to my buddy. This way I am accounting to him for my time and production for the next day.
Then, at the end of each day, we also let the other person know how we did with our daily tasks. We “come clean” about how our day really went.
And I can tell you with 100% certainty, this has almost doubled my output.
Same three reasons, really:
1. I’m competitive, and I want to get more things done than he does.
2. I want him to see I’m working efficiently, so now… I handle ALL my priority “big impact” items first, second, third, etc.
3. Lastly, just because I know he’s there, watching me.
Oh, sure… you’re going to have a bad day every now and again.
That’s called “being normal.”
But you’re going to have a LOT fewer bad days than you’ll otherwise have, when you’re doing this on your own, I assure you.
