Why I NEVER Watch The News, And Why You Shouldn't Either

I don't watch the news or read the daily newspaper's "news" section, for precisely THIS reason.  Here's what happened.

I've been out-of-town in meetings for the last 2 days, and of course, while I was sitting in the hotel room working, I had the television on in the background.  And what did I see?

I saw they arrested this sicko cult leader, Warren Jeffs.  I did not even know this guy was wanted, because like I said, I go out of my way to NEVER watch the news -- just too much negative stuff going on out there, that I certainly don't need to hear about.

Apparently this guy was arranging marriages between -- this is almost too sick to even write about -- underage girls (13 for goodness sakes) and grown men. 

Now I'm far from a perfect parent, but something happened during my life that made me look at children -- especially MY children -- very differently than most people.  I spent 8 long hard years fighting my ex-wife for custody of my sons.  They didn't have it anywhere NEARLY as bad as these poor kids Jeffs victimized, of course, but... let's just say they should have been looked after a lot better than were.

In the end, everything worked out alright, but 8 years seems like a thousand years when you're going through something like that.  Also though, there's no doubt in my mind I became a better father because of it. 

Sometimes you have to get something yanked away from you, before you know just how valuable it is.  Know what I mean?

I think most people take their kids for granted, the same way they probably take their spouses or partners or whatever, for granted.  And look, let's face it... over time, it's difficult to NOT take them for granted.  The thing is, if you're not appreciating these people on a DAILY basis, over the long haul, it's kind of hard to play "catch up" with this stuff.

Does that make sense?

I guess what I mean is, if you "wait" to appreciate someone, it's very hard to do.  Time has a way of getting the excitement and feelings you once had, all lost in the mix.   Kind of like "waiting" until you've gained 40 pounds, to take off that first 10 pounds you've put on.  By that time, your challenge is nearly insurmountable.

Now with respect to this moron Jeffs, there is one thing that has the potential of evening the score.  You see, when a pedophile goes to prison, he's known as a "short eyes."  And in prison, "short eyes" doesn't get treated very well.  In fact, they pretty much get... what they... deserve.

Now I don't expect you to stop watching the news entirely like I do -- I realize this is pretty extreme.  But if you're going to watch the news, and if you're a successful person, or if you're doing all that you can do become even MORE successful, then do yourself a favor and at least avoid watching it last thing at night, or first thing in the morning.

Because these are the times when your sub-conscious mind is MOST receptive to accepting messages.  These are the times you're most "programmable."  And the last thing you want embedded in your subconscious is all that negative crap you see on TV.
