Are We A Nation Of Morons?

Dear Friend,

There's a famous old headline that goes something like "Are We A Nation Of High-Brows?"

I was reminded of this the other day when I read an article that began with the headline that said "Americans Take More Care Buying A Refrigerator Than Picking A Doctor"

Apparently, Americans spend twice as much time doing research on their car, computer, and household applicances, than they do picking out a doctor, and -- here's the real "Moron" part -- 60% of them say they wouldn't do anything different, even if medical information was more accessible and easier to understand!

There are a few reasons why this happens.  First, there's the responsibility issue:  What with the insurance companies perceived stranglehold over your health-care options, people just assume they have little to no power over who's caring for them, and to some extent this is true -- but it's a very SMALL extent.  You have more control than you think, it's just that to exercise this control, you have to use that dirty four-letter word called "work".

Fair, no?  But who says life's always fair?

Secondly, when it comes to medical issues, there's a tendency to bury your head in the sand because of fear over the outcome.  However, I can tell you from experience in this area that ignorance is NOT bliss.  It's amazing how you'll spend HOURS planning a vacation or, like the article says, picking out a refrigerator... and yet when it comes to medical care, you just call the closest doctor, or the one you were referred to by your other doctor (who you did no research on), and you book an appointment, as long as this new guy is in your insurance "network".

When you think this through, it sounds ridiculous, doesn't it?  We're acting like a nation of VICTIMS, in addition to a nation of morons, and frankly I'm not sure which one is worse.

Another factor working here, is that there's a presumption of "competence" when it comes to certain professions, like medicine.  But let me tell you something, and if you never listen to anything else I say, PLEASE listen to this:

INCOMPETENCE is RAMPANT, world-wide.  A doctor friend of mine once told me "Craig, do you know what they call the guy who graduates last from his medical school class?"

They call him "Doctor."

And the higher up the food chain you go, the more far-reaching and devastating are the consequences of this incompetence.  If your cleaners gives you heavy starch on your shirts instead of light, all you suffer is slight discomfort.  If your cardiologist misses something, you're dead.

Advanced degrees, certificates, and yes, even "experience" offer you as much reassurance as a lawyer telling you he'll return your call on a timely basis.

So what should you do to get a handle on your medical care provider?

The same thing you need to do to get a handle on anyone you're dealing with -- look for the inconsistencies.  Do their words match the music they're playing?  What are their own personal affairs like?  How happy is their staff?  How healthy do THEY look?  Talk to their satisfied customers, ask a few of their peers what the deal is about them.

I once had to visit a plastic surgeon to help a friend who was looking for this service (honestly, it wasn't me -- just look at me and you'll see for yourself!).  The doctor's hair was filled with dandruff, his mustache was sloppy, his office was a mess, and he was dressed like a real slob.

Think he's really good about making YOU look "clean," or do you think you'd need to run for the hills and find someone else?  The point is, in life, things will only be as important as you MAKE them.  No one's gonna do it for you, believe me.

And in this case, if you snooze... you really do... lose.

Now go sell something,

Craig Garber
