I Finally Got In Trouble Last Night.

Dear Friend,

Last night I got in trouble.

BIG trouble.

And I'm going to be a big boy here and step up and take responsibility for what I did, right here, naked in front of the world.

You see, for as long as I can remember, I have always been...

A problem child.

I'm the guy at the restaurant table who's always got to order off the menu... I'm the fellow who's never satisfied with things "as is" -- always looking for a better way to build the better mousetrap... and last night, I was also the dummy who was standing there smoking cigars at my son's high-school swim meet.

Look, I don't get out much, and I especially don't get out for 3 or 4-hour blocks of time like I did last night.  So when I AM leaving the house for that long, I MAY forget my wallet, but you'd can bet the farm on the fact that I will NOT forget to grab a cigar and some wooden matches on my way out the door!

So here's what happened:  All the parents are sitting peacefully on the bleachers, watching their kids.  Me being me, I decide the right thing to do is stand on the deck of the pool (because I have a closer view of my son Casey), and light up a cigar.

So the opposing team's coach comes over to me and tells me to move off the deck, that you can't smoke on the deck either.  I didn't particularly appreciate his tone -- he was a little rough with me, and I sorta felt he should have been a little more sensitive to my feelings about having an opportunity to get out in the fresh air, and so I stepped off the deck and walked around the fence, and instead of putting my cigar out, I blew smoke towards him.

Now I KNOW I was wrong in doing this, I'm not stupid.  And honestly, I'm NOT a confrontational sort of guy.  I can GET confrontational, but I haven't been a hot-head in years.  I spent a small fortune on therapy to work all that stuff out in my early 30's (That therapist could've put a wing in her house named after me, I tell ya.).

So why did I react like this?

And why is it that neither of my sons would have done this, and yet... my daughter would've been even MORE stubborn with the guy?

What would you have done in that same situation?

You see, THESE are the kinds of questions you should be thinking about when you're trying to sell someone something -- not whether or not the box should be blue or green, based on the results of a University Of Cincinnati study about consumer buying habits.  You should be thinking about what's going on inside your prospect's MINDS at the moment of impact between themselves and YOU.

THIS is all that matters when it comes to selling.

What makes them tick (don't waste your time with me -- you haven't got enough money on your credit card to figure that one out)... what makes them do certain things... and what do they want to avoid?  And see, once you nail these things down, THEN you can figure out a marketing hook and go out and begin constructing a marketing plan and develope your sales pitch and your sales copy.

Because without this information -- think about it -- what the hell are you going to say -- "Hi my name is Craig, buy this stuff from me?"

I don't think so.  That won't work...

No matter how big your cigar is.
