About James Lee's Dilemma

Dear Friend,

Here at the Renegade Millionaire retreat up in Cleveland, I've met nothing but first-class ambitious people who understand that ultimately, the path to progress lies in your ability to get out of your comfort zone and get out of your own way.

One of my Seductive Selling newsletter subscribers - http://www.kingofcopy.com/ssnl - James Lee, was asking me an interesting question last night at the bar.  (And isn't this where MANY of the best comversations you've ever had, often take place?)

He was saying there seems to be so many different "styles" of copywriting being taught.  Each writer, myself included, has their own way of approaching things, and since James is an aspiring copywriter, he was wondering which road was best.

The answer is actually much simpler than that.  You see, you shouldn't follow any of them.  Your entire purpose of writing copy, is to sell something.  And the best way to sell something is to form a relationship with the people you are trying to sell something to.  It's all about comminication, really.

And for any comminication to work, the first thing it has to do, is be GENUINE.  If you're not being genuine, your audience will "sense" this, just the same way they can "sense" something's not right when you're speaking to someone in person.  Sincerity has a very unique way of coming through... or not.

And just the same way you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear, you can't "be" someone else in writing, just the same way you can't be someone "else" in person.  So what you want to do, is approach each of these styles of writing, as if they were an AA meeting.  You take the good, and you leave the bad behind.

Figure out what's best for you, and then run with it.  Your mission isn't to be a good copywriter, it's to be a good relationship-builder... and if you're good at this, people trust you... and if they trust you... they'll buy.

Mission accomplished, right?

This is the whole concept behind The Seductive Selling System - http://www.kingofcopy.com/seductive .  Although this system has literally HUNDREDS of pages of copywriting examples in it, what it really does is, it let's you crawl inside your prospect's brain for a while, to show you which emotional buy-buttons to push.  THIS is how you form a relationship -- by engaging your prospects emotionally -- not by writing killer copy... not by making hypey promises that are as unrealistic as the easter bunny... and NOT by being someone else.  Plus, if you're being someone else, your buyer will ultimately be disappointed, because they are expecting one thing, and you can't deliver.

Make sense?

Sounds corny, and I wish I could come up with some kind of a super-sophisticated formula for bonding with your prospects, but... in the end, the same advice your mom gave you before you went out on your first date, holds true:  Just be yourself, dear.

Now go sell something,

Craig Garber
