Who are YOU to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?
Dear Friend,
He was a quiet man, outwardly very successful, but inside being eaten alive by something horrible.
Not something tangible (But there again, fear never is, is it?), but a fear brewing inside him for many years now, nonetheless.
Fear of succeeding, fear of being brilliant, talented, and fabulous.
Children never have these fears, do they?
Little Sammy runs around like a diva dressed in her Sunday best, microphone in hand, standing on the living room table singing made-up songs at the top of her lungs. Fear? What's that?
What happens between the time she's on top of the living room table, and the time she's scared shitless and afraid -- crying kind of afraid -- afraid of succeeding. Makes no sense, does it?
Want to know what happens? I'll tell you.
Someone steps in and squashes her microphone. Tosses it aside and says "shut up, you're annoying"... or you watch the person you look up to most in the entire world, toiling away for pennies, nothing but a sore back and a bum leg, after 25 years of this.
Or else you get let down, disappointed, and instead of erasing the experience from your memory like an episode of Gilligan's Island, you replay it, over and over again -- "if only..."
A very brave man, one who is struggling with these things right now, sent me an e-mail the other day, telling me how inspired he was by what I wrote on that particular day.
I am very fortunate in that I get a lot of comments like this. I even meet people in person at seminars who tell me this. But at the same time, many of the people who write -- in fact, most of them -- are neither coaching club members - http://www.kingofcopy.com/maverickmarketer - or newsletter subscribers - (http://www.kingofcopy.com/ssnl - and they've never ordered any of my products or spent even one thin dime consulting with me - http://www.kingofcopy.com/coaching
You'd think, "If you are so damn inspired, why is it you're not using anything I've created to help you succeed?"
Once-in-a-while, if I feel compelled, I will ask them this, in a very gentle and genuine way. I mean, let's face it: the number of people in this world who can make you "feel" ANYTHING, is pretty small, so if someone is inspiring you, why WOULDN'T you take advantage of what they have to offer?
I know I do, as do most of the REALLY successful people I meet. In fact, it's our bane of existence. A mantra, if you will.
Usually, what happens is, when I ask people this question, they are offended and in a very "politically correct" way, they flick me off.
I could care less when this happens because these folks have NOT contributed to my retirement fund, and because they either aren't ready to hear this message, or they never will be. Otherwise, if you think about it... why would they be offended?
For example, if you rode along with your spouse to a dental appointment, and while you were there the dentist asked if you were brushing your teeth -- they looked a little stained -- you wouldn't be offended by the dentist, would you?
Of course not.
Yet, he's not doing anything different than I am. Would he like you to book a cleaning? Yeah, maybe.
But is that what he's thinking about when he asks you about your teeth? Not likely. In all likelihood, he's probably just having a knee-jerk reaction to what he's observing, just like I am.
See, I know when these people give me the heave-ho, it's because they're either afraid of success, or they are scarcity-minded, and at that particular moment in time, I'm forcing them to look at themselves in the mirror -- and they are NOT liking what they're seeing. And I can NOT help people like this, nor do I want to try.
Doing so is about as productive as telling a die-hard alcoholic it's bad to drink. They aren't interested in hearing that -- right now. Even when they know you're right.
So I was ever so pleased and very proud of this man, when I got his response yesterday, after I gently asked him, "Why are you not taking action?" Here's what this brave fella said:
"You have no idea of how many times I've thought about exactly that and your original proposition.
I was sitting in the theatre watching Akeelah and the Bee when they discussed the quote . . .
"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be?"
And I thought of the fear that was keeping me from accepting your challenge. And I thought of how terrible it would be to go to my grave with my music stuck inside of me.
So what's it going to take to get me to break free and get to where I need to be?"
This man, by having the "courage to know the things he can change", WILL make major strides in his business, change his lot in life DRAMATICALLY, and experience the satisfaction of how much better it feels to "escape", than to merely be "free".
I ask you, "Who are YOU to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be?"
I expect to get a flood of comments about this, and I'll answer as many as I can next week. I'm in New York City right now, enjoying a REAL slice of Pizza, smoking cigars from JR Cigars on 5th Avenue and 46th Street, strolling through a few outdoor festivals, and FINALLY relaxing with my wife and kids.
By the way, three things: One, this original quote is from "What Have We To Fear", by Marianne Williamson... Two, if you've ever struggled with things like this, order The Science Of Getting Rich, here: http://www.kingofcopy.com/products/science.html - it will be the best $10 bucks of therapy you've ever invested in... and THREE, if this doesn't inspire you to take action, then you should remove yourself from my list, because THIS... is as good... as I get!
Now go sell something,
