The REAL Truth About Being A (Successful) Copywriter

Dear Friend,

I often get the asked "How many hours a week do you work?"

After all, if you scour the internet, you'll see loads of copywriters either outright telling you they only work "once in a while"... or only "one day a week"... or only "part-time".

I have absolutely no idea whether or not any of this is true -- however I do know one thing that is definitely true:

I DOUBT... Any Of Them.... Are Making Any REAL Money!

A large portion, if not ALL of the "easy life" mistique about being a copywriter, is complete bullshit.

I think what happens is, most copywriters have kind of an "artists" mentality.

And a LARGE portion of creative people like that are inherently lazy -- that's just how they're wired.

They'd rather work hard for a month or so... and then coast the next month...

Pull a few all nighers for a week... and then take the next 3 weeks off.

And then, when the money runs out -- just like the regional manufacturing facility that once employed half the town, but that's been shut down for years -- they begin re-opening, slowly rolling out the dusty old production facilities that laid dormant for so long, once again.

Bluntly, I work like a dog, and I'd venture to say I out-work most of my "peers".  I'm up every morning between 4:30 and 5:00 a.m.  Then, after a cup of coffee and a couple hours of "warming up" -- I ALWAYS write SOMETHING first thing in the morning -- I go to the gym from 7 to 9.

I usually knock off by 6 PM, but I'd be lying if I told you I never worked after 6 PM.

I'm usually working in "some" capacity, 2 or 3 nights a week, but I try and do this after I've spent time with my wife and kids.  And as I'm shifting my business more to publishing information products and relying less on making money from writing sales copy, I am working less time, which is my ultimate goal.

The beauty of my business is, I CAN (and do) work, wherever I want to -- at my home... in a Starbucks... while on vacation in another country -- and no matter WHAT the weather conditions are.

So let's say I want to live in another country for the summer, when our kids are out of school -- I can -- and I will.

Right now it's 5:30 a.m. and I'm in the U.K., finishing up a product of mine that will be released shortly.  I can't tell you the exact title of it yet, for reasons I can't get in to, but if you want to sell goods and services to your prospects, it's something you'll benefit from, dramatically -- for years and years to come.

It'll be one of those manuals you'll keep next to your desk, dog-eared and filled with yellow highlighting.

I DO take off regularly though, for a few hours at a clip, at LEAST 2 days a week, to spend some quality time with my wife.

It is truly nice to spend time together, especially  after all these years of us being apart, when I was building up my copywriting business, and prior to that, back in the late 90's, when I owned my financial planning business.

So, how many hours a week do I work?

More than I want to, but unlike most copywriters,

I'm not worried... about where... my next dollar... is EVER... coming from!

Have a fantastic weekend!

Now go sell something,

Craig Garber
