Why One Man's Trash Is Another Man's Treasure
Dear Friend,
As you well know, the price of gas has gone up.
I have no idea how much it has gone up because I don't look at the price of gas when I'm pumping it any more than I look at the price of a pound of ground coffee while I'm strolling down the ailes in the supermarket (although admittedly, my wife does most of the food shopping around here).
My point is, you can't control the price of "stuff", but if you're a smart marketer you most definitely can control your money situation.
Apparently I'm in the minority though, because so many people ARE preoccupied with the price of gas that sales of wood-burning stoves (just like the ones in "The Waltons") are going through the roof!
In fact, I know I'm in the minority because yesterday when it was announced that gas prices would be dropping a quarter a gallon (Hot damn, that's nearly $4 bucks a tank -- after a month I can buy a new book, yipee!), the Dow Jones Industrial Average (the most-widely viewed measurement of the U.S. stock market's performance) proceeded to go up by 168.89 points -- which is a HUGE daily increase!
Anyhow, some of these wood-stove dealers (As if there's one on every street corner nowadays -- any in your neighborhood? Even here in little old Lutz I can't find one.) are completely out of stock and others are turning their inventory over the second it arrives.
In fact, even wood pellet manufacturers (wood-stove "fuel" if you will) are experiencing backlogs. You use about two or three tons of them per winter to heat up your home, and at an average cost of $200 dollars a ton, they're definitely cheaper than fuel.
Barb Metal, owner of the "Ultimate Stove Shop" in Gibsonia, Pennsylvania -- "Metal", that's a ironic name for someone who sells wooden stoves, but oddly enough, I met an honest marketer last week who's last name was Crook, so what do I know? -- anyhow, Barb Metal said she only has one wood stove left, and it's a floor model, but she's tempted to sell it since her distributor is completely out.
Know what I say?
I say, "Barb, what are you waiting for, if you don't sell that stove now, some poor bastard is going to go bankrupt because YOU forced them to heat their house with evil fuel instead of wood pellets!"
Anyway, the whole point of this "news" is to show you there's money to be made from "crises" that are going on now. One's man's trash really is anoher man's treasure. One man's ex-wife really is another man's soulmate. (Except my ex-wife. First you need to have a "soul" to be a "soul-mate", right?)
For instance, are you interested in hurricanes?
Set up a web page listing all the local news in communities that have "hurricane exposure" and list the latest news and local business and government closings, local weather, and put in a "numbers to call" listing. Sell ad space and put up Google adsense and make yourself a few bucks.
Perhaps this might even be a good "starter" website for one of your kids to work on. (The only thing my sons seem to be interested in, that's online, is porn.)
Of course, you could certainly put together an information product about...
"Hot ANY Man Or Woman Can Outfox The Big Oil Companies And Beat Them
At Their Own Game, Saving Yourself At Least 37% On ALL Your Fuel Costs!"
Of course, all your manual would need to say is "1. Don't use your car... and 2. Buy a wood-burning stove.", but do you see where I'm going with this?
Heck, you could even start brokering wood stoves if you want -- you don't even have to take physical posession of the stove -- just be the marketing arm of Barb Metal's distributor and who knows, maybe the streets you're walking down will soon be lined with gold!
Oh I forgot, Barb's distributor is all sold out.
Glad I live in Florida where it's cozy and warm.
Now go sell something,
Craig Garber
