The Ghost Of Christmas Gifts Past

Dear Friend,

Some things never change, and even though the gifts you see lying on your floor undeneath your Christmas tree may LOOK different than the ones you got as a kid...

In reality, they're not.

You might think consumer electronics and all the newest gadgets top the list of gifts, but the truth is, they take a back seat to clothing, books, CD's, DVD's and video games.

And CD's, DVD's and video games are just modernized versions of LP's, VHS tapes, and board games.

And what the retailers are reporting is that being "new" drives sales -- which goes along hand-in-hand with what your marketing should be emphasizing when it's possible.

Think about it, does anyone want to buy an "Old Discovery"... or an "Old Business System"... or even at it's most mundane form, something as inanimate as an "old shirt"... or an "old soap dish".

Of course not, right?

See what I mean?

And here are some other interesting facts about Christmas spending:

  • Back in 1965, Americans spent 1.4% of their money on toys and sporting goods.  At 1.9% today, that number hasn't changed much, and probably reflects either an increased cost or maybe a few more health-conscious members of society.

  • Barbie, which made its (her?) debut in 1959... is still the number one selling toy for girls today.

  • And although boys want video games most, nowadays... Lego's, which came out in 1962, and Hot Wheels, which came out in 1968, are numbers two and three respectively today.

  • And even though the biggest shockwave to consumer spending came on the heels of the arrival of the personal computer in the 1980's -- in fact, last year Americans spent $51 Billion on computers... we also spent $54 Billion in shoes as well.  (And a good portion of them are in my daughters closet and scattered all over our house, I may ad.)

And of course, as media changes, accessories change along with them -- designer cases for iPods, for example, and clothing and knapsacks that now have pockets and handles for all these new doo-dads we put in them.

So as you can see, all we've done is added a few new outer layers some of the "older" things we've always loved, but having said that -- if there's a sweater, a tie, and the proverbial Christmas fruitcake under the tree with my name on them, I'll know I did something wrong to someone.
