What Happens When You Conquer Your Fears?
Dear Friend,
Let's dig into my mailbag today and see what comes out. This one may ring a bell with you, so listen up:
"Hi Craig,
I'm on my way to my 40s, and one of my dreams was to become a millionaire. Recently this dream has been dusted off again, and my personal goal is to be a millionaire in the next seven years. With millionaire you should read financial independence. So how will I achieve this?
One of the Money Mountains is direct mail. The more I learn about this business, the more excited I'm becoming as I learn from the successes of others. Believe me I'm risk aversive, from experience, and will only emerge myself once I understand how this works. So after about two years of attending various seminars (which normally ask for my money in some fashion), I have decided to try direct marketing and internet infopreneuring.
These seem related and supportive of each other. So what do I know about these businesses? I will be successful by following proven systems. The how-to still eludes me a bit, as I don't have any products to sell. My start-up needs to be low capital. I also want to have fun while I'm doing this, as I want a stress free life for me and my family. This dream is almost in my grasp, so a little push in the right direction will be welcomed. Regards"
O.K., fair enough.
If I'm going to help this man, I'm going to have to dissect what he's saying -- for his own benefit.
The first thing you need to do is sit and figure out what happened to your dream of becoming a millionaire the first time? For most people, this is a VERY powerful dream that doesn't just visit you one evening and then dissipate into the night air.
What about success eluded you and how are you going to do things differently THIS time?
Why was the fire in your jets cooled and where did you lose your fuel along the way?
Because if you don't eliminate this dream-killer from your life this time around, your results will be no different.
And believe me, you're probably going to have to work like a dog to do this, because negative forces abound all around you, and they take persistence and a level of awareness most people DON'T have, to get rid of. So be prepared for a vicious fight, but the end result is WELL worth your struggle.
Not sure what your demons are, but I am sure they'll want to sabotage your efforts, every corner you turn.
The good news is, nothing inspires you to succeed, more than each step you take towards success.
Second, if you're risk averse, then give up NOW!
If you want to be an entrepreneur, you're going to have to risk your time... your ideas... and your money.
And two years of attending seminars and studying is MORE than enough time to jump in. Do you REALLY expect you or your family to have a stress-free life, just by you continuing to attend seminars alone?
That's like saying you want to lose weight by reading books about exercise.
At this point, you're risking a great deal of money by continuing to do nothing but spending your money WITHOUT taking action.
You'd be much better off doing SOME-THING... continuing to spend your money on seminars and learning... but only NOW, when you go to these seminars... you share your experience with instructors and co-attendees and figure out how to do even BETTER the next time out.
When you haven't done anything yet, how can you improve on "zero"?
Also, as someone who charges a LOT of money in exchange for giving GREAT advice back in return, it's pathetic when I hear people bitching about getting "asked for money in some fashion."
This is scarcity mentality and unless you rid yourself of it, you will ALWAYS be struggling to succeed.
Do you expect FREE advice?
Does your dentist fill your cavities for free?
Do you get free gas down at your local corner gas station?
And how about groceries... or cable television... or video rentals -- free too?
Do YOU work for free? Does your wife?
Paying for advice... and your failure to USE this same advice -- are mutually exclusive events. Don't confuse them or be frustrated by the first, when what's in your control is in the second.
It's like attending an "A.A." meeting -- this doesn't stop you from drinking.
Lastly, both of these things you've talked about -- direct mail and internet marketing -- are both VERY low cost operations. And since direct mail is less used and customers are somewhat easier to attract in some cases, I'd suggest you start there.
Otherwise, you'll put up a website... no one will visit it... and then you'll shut down again. When you have more of a vested interest -- and you will with direct mail because there's more "work" involved than the internet, you'll put forth greater effort to figure out what went wrong.
My concern here is that you gave up on direct mail before you started, and justified quitting (which is what you did), by saying the "internet" is REALLY the thing you need to learn.
The truth is, you'll learn more with direct mail, and there's also a tremendous feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment when you drop a few thousand letters in the mail, that putting up a website will ever give you at your first go-round.
Listen, delay is not only the death of a sale... but it's also... the death of your financial success.
And there's no time like right NOW so giddyap and get moving.
Now go sell something,
