30 Days In The Hole

If that doesn't make you feel good, then pinch yourself because you're either dead -- or else you might be my ex-wife -- yikes!

Anyway, it's great getting feedback like this.

Last week I told you about some comments one of my Seductive Selling Newsletter Subscribers sent in.  These remarks were very incisive and I wanted to share a few more of them, becuase maybe you can relate to some of the issues this man is experiencing.  My comments are below each of his:

"I’ve gotten very skeptical with all the internet marketing stuff and copywriting programs that are being offered.  There is so much of “become a millionaire in a month” etc. being put out there. But a lot of them play on that very basic human emotion – GREED."

*** Yes, and in the "how to make a bundle" marketplace, that's often the hook, but the truth is, there are LOADS of other emotional buy-buttons you can, and you SHOULD be pushing, that are FAR better than greed.  For instance, what about "hope"... or "fear"... or "compassion"?  In The Seductive Selling System - http://www.kingofcopy.com/seductive - I reveal 47 of them, showing you EXACTLY how to use them, with LIVE sales copy examples as well as the psychological underpinnings of each of them.  Having a quiver full of these at your disposal lets you shoot MUCH further and wider than having only one or two at your disposal.

I’ve worked through the Cybernetics course from Maltz and it’s a great one.  I’ve read Wallace Wattle’s “The Science of Getting Rich” (note see the NEW version of this here: http://www.kingofcopy.com/science ) along with scores of other psychology and self-help books.  All great stuff.  It’s like planting a seed – you have to plant and continually water it before something grows.  And you don’t know exactly when or how that will happen."

*** No, you don't usually know "when" it will happen, but the KEY word you mentioned is "continually".  I CAN tell you from experience that when you want it to happen badly enough... when your fear of success and your fear of failure and your discomfort with change is shoved far enough aside, THAT is when it happens.  Sometimes you need someone to help show you what this looks like (I know I needed to see it first-hand), but that's O.K.  As the old adage goes, NO man is an island.

"But why does it take some of us so long to “get it”?  How does that “shroud of unbelief” get removed?  I think by repetition… continual watering.  How about you?"

*** When you are fearless and believe you are genuinely deserving, that shroud gets removed.  Oh, and when you take action -- that keeps the shroud off.

"You said something very simple, but very profound about the “secret” to charging more… you just do it!  Wow, what a concept!  I never thought of that before…duh.  Like all great truths, they are simple."

*** Good, because I'm a simple guy.  Life's complicated enough, and I'm really REALLY bad when it comes to taking orders (you can even see my wife's take on this in this months newsletter) or asking for permission, and I'm FAR too impatiend to stand there waiting around for the "charge more fairy" to give me the go-ahead too.

"Our instant gratification culture is the kiss of death for success – because people give up if they don’t get it easily or quickly.  I’ve been fortunate enough to obtain a decent level of success in my life so far and am very thankful.  But I know I could be much further along if I had had the right perspective on “success” when I started out. 

Here’s the bottom line: I want to make a lot more and be a lot happier at the same time! I want to give more, do more, be more… balance.  And I want to implant the CORRECT ways of thinking to my kids, so they will enjoy high levels of success early in their careers…fortunately they are still young enough and moldable."

*** We all want this.  Most people SAY they want it (like the guy I talk about in this month's "Tales From The Back-End Column, in The Seductive Selling Newsletter), but in reality... they want it the same way they want to lose a few pounds... the same way they want to start a business one day... and the same way they'll get "around to it".  Wishing... and doing -- no matter HOW hard you actually ARE wishing -- are mutually exclusive events.

As far as raising kids go, here's something I learned literally moments before my oldest son Nick was born.  I had horrible role models for parents, and I was pretty clueless about child-rearing, so this message came JUST in time, and it's one I'll never forget.  I believe in it and I've consistently tried to apply it.  There was a nurse anaesthesiologist (or something like that) in the room with us when Nick was being delivered.  She turned to me and said something very profound, and for me at least, something I needed to know.

She said, "Your kids are going to jump over lots and lots of stones as they get older.  Your job isn't to pick out which stones they jump over -- it's to make them the best stone jumpers they can be."

Simple message, probably most people knew it, but for me... it was revolutionary.

"As we get older, only the people who really want to change put forth the effort – because it’s too easy to stay in our comfort zone unless the pain gets intolerable."

*** This is why so few people succeed.  Most people can't even give up their favorite television show, let alone get up an hour early to learn something new.

"But like a frog getting boiled by putting it in a pan of cold water, and slowly heating it up over time, people get cooked and never realize how bad their condition really was until it’s too late – even if it started off “normal."  And the saddest part is this: that they could have lived their dreams if they would have only believed in themselves and learned the truths that must be followed to succeed (and applied them)!"
